The SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/blog\/posttraumatic-stress-disorder-awareness-month\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">honors this month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is all about helping people learn what PTSD is, how it affects lives, and, most importantly, how you or someone you care about can get help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTSD is something that can happen after you go through a traumatic or scary event. This could be anything from a car accident to a natural disaster, a sexual assault, or even time spent in war. It doesn\u2019t matter if you&#8217;re a Veteran or a civilian, PTSD doesn\u2019t choose who it affects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though PTSD treatments do work, <\/span><b>many people never get the help they need<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The goal was clear: make sure people know what PTSD is and what can be done about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here in the U.S., about <\/span><b>6.8% of adults<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will have PTSD at some point in their lives. <\/span><b>Women are more likely than men<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to experience it, often because of sexual trauma. Veterans are also deeply affected. For example, about <\/span><b>30% of Vietnam War veterans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>10% of Gulf War veterans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>14% of Iraq War veterans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have had PTSD. Their goal is to make sure that you and others know there is help out there. The more we talk about PTSD, the more likely people are to recognize it, seek help, and feel better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"introduction-to-ptsd-and-its-causes\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduction to PTSD and Its Causes<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTSD is a mental health condition that can happen after someone goes through a very scary or upsetting event. The symptoms can come and go over time. If these problems last longer than 4 weeks and make life hard, like causing big stress or making work and home life difficult, it might be PTSD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><b>four main types of PTSD symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and to be diagnosed, a person usually has some of each type. Sometimes, it can feel like the event is happening again, which is called a flashback. Things like certain sounds, smells, or places can remind you of the trauma and cause these memories to come back suddenly. For example, if someone were in a car accident, they might avoid driving or riding in a car. Sometimes people stay very busy or don\u2019t get help because they don\u2019t want to think about the trauma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-struggling-with-negative-thoughts-and-feelings\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. You might feel numb and not enjoy things like you used to. Sometimes people forget parts of the event or feel like the world is very unsafe. Experiencing Hyperarousal<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might feel jumpy, easily startled, or always on the lookout for danger. It can be hard to sleep or concentrate. Some people get angry easily or do things that aren\u2019t healthy, like smoking too much or using drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-about-children\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What About Children?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids can show PTSD in different ways depending on their age:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Young children (under 6 years old)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may get upset when their parents are not nearby, have trouble sleeping, or act out the scary event through their play.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Children ages 7 to 11<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might also act out the event in their drawings or stories, have nightmares, or become more irritable or aggressive. They may want to avoid school or have trouble with friends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Teens (ages 12 to 18)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often have symptoms like adults, such as feeling sad or anxious, pulling away from others, or doing risky things like using drugs or running away.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or someone you care about shows these signs, it\u2019s important to reach out for help. PTSD can be treated, and no one has to face it alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"modern-treatment-options-for-ptsd\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern Treatment Options for PTSD<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good news: PTSD can be treated, and there are many ways to help people feel better. Here are some of the common treatments used today:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1-cognitive-behavioral-therapy-cbt\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies suggest that this type of talk therapy, where you work with a therapist to change the way you think about the trauma, helps PTSD sufferers learn new ways to cope with their feelings. One common method is <\/span><b>Prolonged Exposure Therapy,\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which helps people safely face memories and situations they have been avoiding so they can reduce their fear and distress over time.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-medications\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Medications<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors sometimes prescribe medicines to help with PTSD symptoms. These can include antidepressants like fluoxetine, paroxetine, and venlafaxine.
